Zakopane Post OfficeOn the right hand side is the Post Office, a building constructed by Józef Deptuch at the beginning of the 20th century and opened to public in June of 1905. In the 1930's a second floor was added onto it destroying all the traditional local features. In the years 2005-2007 the building underwent a thorough modernisation
The first post office in Zakopane was opened in Kuźnice and catered mainly for the needs of the Manor House and the iron works. At the turn of the 1870's when Zakopane was becoming a popular mountain resort and a spa, a seasonal post office was opened at Józef Krzeptowski's house in Kościeliska street (today's U wnuka restaurant) for tourists and holiday makers. One of the classic Zakopane stories is the one about the first postman Kuba Gąsienica Kloryk, nicknamed Poczciarz. He could neither read nor write, he walked bare feet, but always delivered the letters to the receivers and in due time. The first holiday maker he would meet in the street would read out the address of the first letter, and the next ones would do the same with other letters. Apparently, Tytus Chałubiński's letters marked as urgent he would deliver himself to as far as the Five Polish Lakes Valley, hiking over the Zawrat pass bare feet of course.

All of the below quotes come from a book called Zakopane, The Historic Guide (available only in Polish). Translation: Agnieszka Baczkowska.
